A community group in South West Kerry says it will object to plans for six oyster farms.

The Department of Agriculture has received the applications from a number of groups and individuals for aquaculture and foreshore licences on the Derreen River at Valentia Harbour, near Renard Strand.

Some of the submissions state that if their licence applications for oyster farms are successful, they will be able to create more jobs.

However, the community group - Renard Save Our Strand - says these oyster farms will detract from the beauty of the area, limit access to the shore and are not suitable for a special area of conservation.

The group says if all the applications at Derreen get the go ahead, it would lead to almost 70 acres of oyster farms.

The deadline for objections and observations to the Department of Agriculture is next week.

Separately, the Department of Agriculture has received four applications for foreshore licences at Ballycarbery Strand near Cahersiveen.
