Today marks the start of the bathing season, and Clean Coasts is launching a campaign on smoking related litter.

Clean Coasts is asking people to dispose of smoking related litter correctly to protect the environment and marine life.

Cigarette butts are the most common item found on beaches in Ireland and account for almost 50% of all discarded waste in the country.

They’re often assumed to be biodegradable, but one cigarette butt might take over a decade to decompose.
