Now is the time to convert the BorgWarner facility into a ventilator production company.

That’s according to CEO of Tralee Chamber Alliance, Ken Tobin.

Yesterday BorgWarner announced its Monavalley-based manufacturing plant will close at the end of next March with the loss of 210 jobs.

CEO of Tralee Chamber Alliance, Ken Tobin says the closure is a hammer-blow and comes as a major shock.

The company says the decision to close the Tralee plant is due to a drop in demand for products made at the factory; BorgWarner makes air heaters for the automotive industry.

Mr Tobin says ventilator production companies are being created throughout Eastern Europe and thinks now is the time for such a company to open in Tralee, adding the skillset is available here.

Tralee Chamber CEO is also calling for Kerry to be separated from Cork when it comes to economic development to ensure this county gets the supports it needs:

Meanwhile, Minister for Education Norma Foley has also expressed her deep regret and disappointment that the BorgWarner factory is to close.

She says it’s an immense blow to Tralee and the county, adding it’s also a hugely distressing time for workers and their families.

Minister Foley says she has discussed the closure and need for support with CEO of IDA Ireland, Martin Shanahan and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment and Tánaiste Leo Varadkar.
