Walking loops should be developed in Kerry, in a bid to encourage people to come here on a staycation.

That’s according to Fianna Fáil councillor Breandán Fitzgerald.

He raised the issue at the Castleisland Corca Dhuibhne Municipal District meeting.

Cllr Breandán Fitzgerald is calling on Kerry County Council’s Tourism Office to develop a series of two or three-day walking loops throughout the MD.

He says these would promote Kerry as a walking and staycation destination, adding promoting the area to tourists, due to COVID-19 travel restrictions is important.

Cllr Fitzgerald referenced the Dingle Way in particular, but stated such walks could be located throughout the municipal district.

The Fianna Fáil councillor says these would be particularly vital amenities during the shoulder season; he says it would enable visitors to arrive Friday, undertake a walk on Saturday and return home or travel to another walking route elsewhere in the county on a Sunday.

Kerry County Council says it will engage with the relevant bodies on the matter.

The council adds that the Dingle Way is currently undergoing a major upgrade under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme, and it will engage with the various groups involved to further promote its use by visitors.
