There’s a call for Kerry County Council to get advance notice from Government departments of applications for licences to provide accommodation to asylum seekers in the county.
That’s according to Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Cahill, who brought an emergency motion on the matter before the local authority’s monthly meeting.
He says there’s a lack of medical facilities, transport, employment, water and sewage in many rural towns and villages.
He believes, because of this, Kerry County Council, as the planning authority, should have a major input in identifying any infrastructure that would need to be put in place in advance to facilitate the arrival of people into direct provision centres.
Cllr Cahill feels lessons must be learned from the setting up a centre in Cahersiveen, and welcomes the new Government’s intention to end direct provision.
