A ban on bathing is in place at a South Kerry beach after excessive ecoli levels were detected in the water.
Kerry County Council is erecting bathing prohibition signs at Kells beach this afternoon, following advice from the HSE Environmental Health section.
The council says this result is probably associated with recent heavy rainfall flowing across farmland in the area.
Kerry County Council took samples of the water at Kells beach on Monday.
This was part of the council’s bathing water sampling processes which are taken pre-season at all Blue Flag beaches.
The results of these samples returned today and showed an excessive ecoli reading.
The council contacted the HSE Environmental Health section and they advised a bathing prohibition at Kells beach based on the results.
The council says the bathing water at Kells beach is being resampled today and these results will be available on Saturday.
