The Kerry public has been asked to protect local heritage sites and monuments following a recent rise in damage.

A new campaign by the Office of Public Works and the National Monuments Service is encouraging people to visit Ireland’s varied heritage sites but to be especially mindful of how fragile, vulnerable, and irreplaceable these sites can be.

There are over 145,000 recorded archaeological sites and monuments in Ireland, 15,000 of those are in Kerry.

Dr Connie Kelleher of the National Monuments Service said there was some damage to Ardfert Cathedral recently following anti-social behaviour.

Dr Kelleher said most damage is caused by simple things like people walking on walls or leaving a gate open.

But she urged people to contact the Gardaí if they see deliberate damage taking place.
