The Irish South and West Fish Producers’ Organisation has expressed its delight at the compromise of the French authorities on planned military exercises off the south coast.
The organisation had planned to hold peaceful protests against the exercises at 2 o'clock this morning, however, a statement released by Minister of Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney yesterday revealed that the exercises would not happen within Ireland’s Exclusive Economic Zone.
Earlier this year, the same group persuaded Russia to abandon its plans for exercises in international waters off the Cork coast.
CEO of the Irish South and West Fish Producers’ Organisation has renewed the group’s call for a moratorium on such activities for 10 years in Irish waters.
