Almost half the land area of Killarney National Park burned in weekend wildfires

Between 2,500 to 3,000 hectares of Killarney National Park have been burned in the weekend’s wildfires.

This represents 50% of the land area of the park.

The blaze is now extinguished but is being monitored by the fire service.

The damaged areas were assessed by Minister for Housing Local Government and Heritage Darragh O'Brien, Minister for State for Heritage Malcom Noonan and Minster for Education Norma Foley this afternoon.

Speaking at a press conference in Killarney, Minister Noonan said he was shocked at the extent of the damage and that significant of resources will be needed to assess the full damage as well as begin the work of remediation:

Minster O’Brien condemned the illegal fires, said he was grateful that no one was hurt or injured and that resources will be provided for the park:
