Almost 120 allegations of misconduct made against Kerry gardaí last year

There were almost 120 allegations of misconduct made against Kerry gardaí last year by members of the public.

This is revealed in the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission’s report for 2020.

GSOC investigates complaints and allegations made against members of An Garda Siochana.

Nationwide, complaints of garda misconduct increased last year by 11% to 1,955, which comprised over 3,000 allegations.

During 2020, 119 allegations of misconduct by gardaí in Kerry were received by GSOC, two of which were referred to the garda commissioner.

GSOC’s report says many complaints nationally were in relation to people’s interactions with gardaí about the enforcement of COVID-19 restrictions.

The most common issues which gave rise to complaints were road policing incidents, conduct during investigations, garda discourtesy and garda conduct while performing a search.

GSOC says that as a result of complaints received in 2020, 572 criminal investigations were opened, while some members were fined, warned, reprimanded or received reductions in pay.
