It’s hoped to open Skellig Micheal to visitors again in May of next year, following the OPW’s decision to close it for the season yesterday.
The Office of Public Works says, having consulted with a number of parties, it wouldn't be feasible to open the island site for the remainder of this visitor season.
Mark Conway of the Portmagee Development Group says the goal now is to get the tourist attraction open safely on May 1st, 2021; this will be preceded by full consultation with the boatmen and the OPW.
He says the news was very disappointing for business throughout South Kerry.
Mr Conway disagrees with the OPW’s reasoning for keeping the attraction closed.
