36% increase in chimney fires in Kerry during first five months of 2021

There was a 36% increase in chimney fires in Kerry during the first five months of the year.

Figures released at the recent Tralee Municipal District meeting showed the Kerry Fire Brigade Service was mobilised 321 times between January and May, up from 315 over the same period in 2020. The figures also detailed the type of fires the service responded to during the first five months of 2021.

The Kerry Fire Service responded to 57 chimney fires between January and May, which is up from 42 in the same period last year. There was also a slight increase in the number of gorse fires attended by the fire service, which was 158 during the first five months of 2021, up from 151 last year.

The service attended 29 road traffic accidents in Kerry between January and May, down from 36 compared to the same time in 2020. The Kerry Fire Service rescued or removed two people from water during this time, which is down from 9 in the same period last year.
