An 18-year-old man has been remanded on bail in relation to the seizure of €140,000 worth of drugs in Kilcummin yesterday.
Patrick Daly Jr of Buddihans, Kilcummin appeared before Judge Colm Roberts at Mallow District Court this afternoon, facing four charges contrary to Sections 3 and 15 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977.
Solicitor for the accused, Padraig O'Connell, applied for bail on the grounds that he had no previous convictions, had just turned 18, and co-operated fully with gardaí.
The state opposed the application for bail on the basis of the value of the cannabis seized, which the court heard was €140,000, and because the accused was a perceived flight risk.
The state also said if he was released, he would commit other serious offences, and he is a known drug user.
Mr O'Connell stated the accused is merely a cog in the wheel, totally out of his depth and is a vulnerable, fragile individual.
He added that although Mr Daly was caught red handed, there was a COVID concern in prison and it would be some time before a trial takes place.
The state consented to bail subject to seven conditions.
These were that €500 of a cash bail is provided by the accused, and €2,500 by his father, that he signs on daily at Killarney garda station and observes a curfew on a nightly basis.
Mr Daly must also hand over his passport and not apply for a new one, keep his phone charged at all times and answer all calls from gardaí.
The accused must remain intoxicant-free and reside at his home in Buddihans.
Judge Roberts remanded him on bail and adjourned the matter for DPP directions on June 15th.
