Irish Water is to replace a further 1.2 kilometres of problematic water main in the mid-Kerry area.

Locals in Beaufort, the Gap of Dunloe and the Bord of Works area have been subjected to watermains breaks on an almost weekly basis according to councillors.

Irish Water replaced 1.5 kilometres of mains in the area last year.

Irish Water has confirmed to Kerry County Council that it is to replace 1.2 kilometres of watermain on the Bord of Works road.

Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Patrick O'Connor-Scarteen said further details on the works will be provided in due course.

He said obviously more was requested from Irish Water and is badly needed however this announcement is significant.

Meanwhile, Councillor Michael Cahill said the reply from Irish Water on the Beaufort water supply is totally inadequate.

The Fianna Fáil councillor says Irish Water said it will take significant investment over many years to bring the current water infrastructure up to a good standard in many areas of the country, including Kerry.

Cllr Cahill says this announcement doesn't address the immediate problem in the area where bursts are almost a weekly fact of life and he urged Irish Water to carry out a major pipe replacement project in the area as soon as possible.
